EARLIER:
Fire-bombing aircraft and more than 30 fire trucks on the ground are fighting an out-of-control fire at Katunga on Friday, January 2.
A CFA spokesperson said firefighters were called to the stubble fire on Sandmount Rd shortly before noon.
By 12.30pm the fire had split in two and more than four hectares of what the spokesperson described as “grass and scrub” had already burnt.
The fires are burning in paddocks along Sandmount Rd between Labuan Rd and Kokoda Rd in the Katunga and Muckatah area, and are heading in a westerly direction.
The CFA spokesperson said winds of 15 to 30km/h were fanning the blaze, and more firefighters from around the district were likely to be called to help in the fight.
