After which he shared some of his football stories with the young players.
Mark began with Cobram in 1984 at the age of 15 and was selected in the team in 1995 when Cobram took out the Grand Final, a highlight in his football career.
He was fast around the ground, a talented onballer and went on to win a swag of Best and Fairest trophies over his long playing career
Always on the move Mark played Under-19s for the Swans in the VFL, later he joined Shepparton where he coached the side to a grand final win and also played a season or two with the WA League.
He returned to play with Cobram in 2003-2005 to finish his playing days, where he was to win three Best and Fairest awards in as many years.
Mark was impressed with the enthusiasm of the youngsters he trained with and welcomed their volley of questions about his playing days before they all sat down to a well earnt meal after training.
Winning junior public speakers
The Lions Club of Cobram conducted their Junior Public Speaking Competition at a club level last week.
The quality of the entrants from local school’s Grades 3/4 and Grades 5/6 was extraordinary for students of such a young age.
It is not an easy task for students to research and prepare a required topic and then stand before a microphone and give a three or four minute speech.
There were four entrants in each year level and the winner of Grades 3/4, with the topic “a place other than her home state that she would like to visit”, was Aroha Kautai who spoke of the North Pole.
It was a well researched speech by the confident young student who attends Cobram Anglican Grammar School.
Grades 5/6 winner was Summer Jarjoura with her topic “Introducing a famous person who lived in the 19th century”.
Summer delivered a very interesting insight into the life and death of Albert Einstein. She is also a student at Cobram Anglican Grammar School.
Grades 5/6 were also required to give a one minute impromptu speech on “What is your favourite toy and why?“
Each student gave a creditable performance and the three judges did not have an easy task to select the two winners who were judged on content and delivery.
Participating students Patrick Berry and Amelia Sicliano of St Joseph’s and Bella Broderick of Cobram Anglican Grammar School participated in the grades 3/4 competition.
And Sophie Turner and Alice Hickey of St Joseph’s; and Isabel Stirling from Cobram Anglican Grammar School competed in the grades 5 /6 competition.
Each were presented with gift vouchers by Lions adjudicator Ron Simon and Secretary Janet Austin.
While the talented winners Aroha Kautai and Summer Jarjoura received a larger voucher and the opportunity to represent the Lions Club of Cobram in the Regional Final which is to be held at the Yarrawonga Showgrounds on Sunday, August 7, commencing at 1pm.
Congratulations to each student who undoubtedly made their families and schools very proud.
The oldies trained with their boys
The 2022 Cobram footballers senior sides were joined by their dads at training last week in an array of stylish footy gear.
Not sure how much training the oldies took part in, but it must have been heart-warming to have them out on the ground offering encouragement and inspiration to their talented offspring.
There was no doubting that their minds were willing, not so certain about the remainder of the body.
Anyway, well done guys, one would guess that psychologically being on the ground with your boys would have boosted their confidence significantly.
Recognition for Fred and Kath
Long-term members of the Cobram Garden Club Fred and Kath Gregory have been recognized for 24 years of valuable contribution to their club.
The surprised couple was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and flowers by club president Mary Kennedy at the club’s recent monthly meeting held at Killara House.
Fred and Kath grew up on dairy farms in Gippsland and moved to Cobram in 1998 and joined the garden club soon after their arrival, “It was the first club we joined when we came to Cobram! We always enjoyed meeting people with a common interest to ourselves. We love gardening and we’re passionate about plants, particularly roses and grow more than 60 varieties in our own garden!” said Fred.
Being members of the garden club has brought the couple a lot of joy. They have made long-lasting friendships, contributed to the running of the club in a formal capacity, learnt from fellow members about all types of plants and shared cuttings and valuable knowledge.
Kath is involved in organising the flower show at Cobram’s Agricultural Show and looks forward to this year’s event, the first in three years owing to COVID-19, where she will act as a steward to the judges. “I just love the show and look forward to it enormously,” says Kath.
The day turned into a double celebration for Fred who also turned 91 years of age and besides singing happy birthday, his fellow club members enjoyed sharing a generous slice of his delicious birthday cake provided by daughter Sue Barnes of Katamatite.
The Cobram Garden Club meets on the third Thursday of each month, while the committee also organise day trips and visits to open gardens in the latter part of the year. Currently the club is 28 years old and has 52 members and will certainly offer a warm welcome to anyone interested in joining them.
