Numurkah levee progresses with parks and walking track updates

Crews have successfully laid new turf at Louis Hamon Park, creating a refreshed green space that will be partially available for community use during the upcoming Show Us Your Wheels event.

This milestone marks a key step in restoring and enhancing public areas impacted by the new levee construction.

“We’re thrilled to see Louis Hamon Park taking shape again,” Moira Shire Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson said.

“The new turf is a sign of progress and a promise of what’s to come as we continue to improve flood resilience across Numurkah.

“Council extends its sincere gratitude to the Show Us Your Wheels organisers for their flexibility through the works.”

In surrounding areas, Melville St has reopened to traffic following the completion of asphalting works.

While some aftercare and landscaping will continue, traffic management signage remains in place to ensure safety for all road users.

Concrete works at Remembrance Dve are now complete, with landscaping and irrigation progressing well west of Melville St.

These works are expected to wrap up by the end of October, ahead of the next construction stage near the Council Depot.

As part of the levee works near Quinn St, council has elevated sections of the walking track to accommodate the levee bank while successfully preserving 13 mature trees.

This approach reflects council’s commitment to balancing infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship.

In response to community feedback, a new bench seat will also be installed, and the existing one relocated to improve accessibility for all users.

“These upgrades are about more than infrastructure, they’re about protecting our town for generations to come,” Dr Emonson said.
