All teams will take a break over the festive season, with the season resuming in the new year.
For Cobram, the Christmas spirit seemed to take an unfortunate slant.
The saying goes, “it is better to give than receive”.
But surely not on the sporting field.
The Cobram division one team travelled to Barooga in a crucial game for the Tigers.
Cobram’s Haydn Smith and his team took on Chris Philpot, who has returned to Barooga after a long association with Tocumwal.
Philpot took the chocolates in a close contest, winning 22-18.
Cobram’s Greg Dunn made a welcome return to division one and took on Barooga’s Ian Smethurst.
In a cracker of a game, the scores were tied at 19-all on the penultimate end.
Barooga scored a single on the 21st end to take the rink points, 20-19.
Cobram’s Garry Carter met Barooga’s Anthony Hulm.
The Cobram players failed to make their “presence” felt and went down 15-25.
Final score: Cobram 52 lost to Barooga 67.
Cobram’s division two side travelled to Wunghnu.
Cobram’s Peter Garland faced Wunghnu’s Leslie Clarke.
Cobram did well early, leading 9-8 after six ends, but Wunghnu ran away with a 10-shot win, 17-27.
Marj McDonald (skip), Kerry Baldacchino (third), John Anders (second) and Luke Dunn (lead) were like lords a-leaping in a rare rink win for Cobram, defeating Wunghnu’s Allan Jones 22-17.
Cobram’s Ron Dean and his yellow and black elves of Darryl O’Connor (lead), Paul McKay (second) and Colin McDonald (third) worked hard all day against Wunghnu’s Russell Smith.
With the score at 16-all after 18 ends, Cobram scored singles in the remaining three ends to win 19-16.
Although winning two rinks, the overall tally wasn’t in Cobram’s favour, going down 58 to Wunghnu 60.
Tocumwal Golf hosted Cobram in division three.
Cobram’s Laurie Vinecombe took charge of a rink that met Toc’s Alan Jones.
Vinecombe’s team was unable to get to the top of the tree, going down by four shots, 11-15.
Cobram’s Trevor Wood (skip), Annette Temple (lead), Sue Carter (second) and Tracey Emery (third) had a closely fought contest with Toc’s Ben Gierveld with the margins as thin as a slice of boarding house ham.
In the end, it was a rink win for the Tigers — Cobram 18 defeated Tocumwal Golf 15.
Cobram’s Phill O’Dwyer caught up with Toc’s Alan Whiteside, but Whiteside was like Scrooge and spoiled Cobram’s fun.
Cobram sadly going down, 15-20.
No team was dominant on the day but Tocumwal Golf was good enough to win the day, 44-50.
Berrigan gifted Cobram’s division four a walkover.
Cobram’s division five team hosted Strathmerton.
Cobram’s Alan Temple went down 14-24 to Strathy’s Kathy Daniel and Barb Turner’s rink was defeated by Ross Kirkham, 13-26.
Overall, Cobram was “sleighed”, 27 to 50.
On a brighter note, Cobram’s Kerry Baldacchino and Christine Dunne made their way into the semi-finals of the Murray Bowls State Pairs Championship last Sunday, when they defeated a Wunghnu and Mooroopna combination, 22-10.
They will now face Lydia Patching and Marie Luci from Numurkah Golf at a date and time to be decided. Well done.
