A shoulder to lean on can sometimes be few and far between for carers, especially in regional areas such as Cobram.
A proposal from NCN Health is looking to change this. Community development officer Nicole Wells wants to provide support for carers and is looking to form a support group in town.
“Carers can often find the pressures of their role quite overwhelming and will need extra support,” she said.
“We want to support carers locally and are currently seeking expressions of interest for a support group with a focus on carers’ health and wellbeing.”
There are more than 2.7 million unpaid carers in Australia providing care and support to a family member or friend.
You may even be a one of them without even realising.
Ms Wells said the role could burgeon from people looking after sick loved ones out of good nature.
But just like paid carers, unpaid carers need help too.
“Often people don’t even realise they can receive a lot of support as a carer,” Ms Wells said.
“A person’s role can transition gradually from looking after a friend or family member who has a degenerative illness or disease or is ageing.
“We can help with prioritising individual support for carers — whether it be in the sectors of health and wellbeing, guidance surrounding dealing with pressure, practical and financial support, respite or to find a councillor for help with the role. There is also specific support for young carers, under the age of 25.”
