But their friends and colleagues managed to surprise them recently, when they were bestowed life membership of the Mayrung Rural Fire Service brigade.
The presentation was made during the recent bush fire preparation training day at Mayrung.
The Balls have both been involved with the Mayrung brigade since the 1970s.
Godron’s journey began with the Mayrung Brigade in January 1971, leading to his receiving his 50-year Long Service Medal clasp last year.
Phyllis joined just three years later, and together they have become a cornerstone of both the brigade and community.
Gordon’s leadership journey includes roles as deputy captain from 2009 to 2011, senior deputy captain from 2011 to 2018, and his current position as Captain since 2018.
Throughout his service, Ball has earned advanced firefighter and crew leader qualifications.
He continues to co-ordinate annual group training days at Mayrung, and also contributes as a member of the Mid Murray Support Brigade.
His distinguished service has garnered numerous accolades, including the NSW Premier's Bushfire Emergency Citation in 2020 and the National Emergency Medal in 2021.
Previously, in 2015, he was awarded the Long Service Medal with clasps for 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service.
Gordon’s dedication has seen him respond to countless emergencies across the region, from local grass fires to major bushfire campaigns.
He played a crucial role during the devastating Black Summer fires of 2019-20, leading crews in protecting communities across southern NSW.
Like her husband, Phyllis has become a beloved figure in the brigade and local community.
She received her 50-year Long Service Medal clasp earlier this year.
Phyllis has been secretary and training officer for the Mayrung brigade since 2017, partnering with her husband to ensure district firefighters are prepared for what may be up ahead through group training days.
She is also described as a great support person to all members of the brigade.
Phyllis’ invaluable contribution extends well beyond emergency response duties.
She has taken charge of catering arrangements at countless training sessions over the decades, ensuring crews remain energised and well-fed during their vital preparation work.
She is renowned for her exceptional culinary expertise - particularly her signature homemade scones topped with jam and cream that have become legendary among members.
