Owner of family-run business MV Locksmiths, Marcus Fry was born in Cobram and has lived in the area his entire life.
Mr Fry has been a locksmith since he was about 17 and has been his own boss for the past 18 years, servicing the Berrigan Shire.
He is president of the Barooga Football Club and has played 300 games of football for Barooga.
He said now was the perfect time to run for council.
“I’ve always been in the area and have lived in the Berrigan Shire for the past 20 years, so I’m putting my hand up to run for council,” Mr Fry said.
“I’m the third generation who has lived in the region and community service is what my family is all about — my parents were both life members of the Barooga Football Club, so I know what it’s like to give up your time and put the community first.”
Public office is a new challenge for Mr Fry but he is willing to give it his all.
“Most of the councillors are of a reasonable age, so I thought it was time for some new blood,” Mr Fry said.
“The Barooga councillor John Bruce has done an excellent job for the community and I want to make sure that’s not forgotten.”
Mr Fry said he had many ideas to improve the shire to benefit the whole community.
“My biggest goals are to have things in place to keep youth engaged and keep them out of trouble, recovery for businesses following border closures and making sure we have jobs in the towns so they can continue to grow and flourish,” Mr Fry said.
“We need to make sure businesses in the area get the support they need and I think my 20 years in business will bring a bit of knowledge to the table.”
Mr Fry said he was planning to tour Berrigan Shire towns to meet with local community members.
There are 124 councils holding elections in NSW this December.
Local government elections are held every four years.
