Plenty of locals took full advantage of Edward River Council’s ‘free tip weekend’, and it turned out to be one of the busiest one yet.

On Sunday morning in particular, there was a steady stream of utes and trailers heading out to the tip.
One contributor said by the time he made his own run late morning, the queue from the gate was about a dozen vehicles deep, stretching right back to the Cobb Highway turn‑off.
While no official numbers were available, gate staff noted it was among the strongest turnouts they’ve seen.
Dino delights

It was not just the kiddies taking advantage of the free promotional activities taking place in the CBD on Saturday.
Decorated whipcracker Brooke Jervis helped drum up promotion for the Conargo Whipcrackers and this weekend’s family fun day at Conargo by dressing in a blow-up dinosaur suit and wandering the streets.
She made sure to not only stop passers by, but to call into shops too.
It included a quick trip to see local sponsors - Denise Phillips at My Shop and Megan Sutton at Diggers Country Outfitters - who delighted in the treats and even snapped a pic with Brooke before sending her back on her way.
False alarms for FRNSW
Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW responded to two callouts at the weekend, which both turned out to be false alarms.
They were called to a campfire along Memorial Drive and a car fire on Sunday, on separate occasions.
Firefighters were unable to find any evidence of a blaze for either.
Although there was no concern in these cases, locals should still be vigilant of fire danger during autumn and as we head into winter.
Cops film in Deni
Some unfortunate locals may find themselves on TV later this year, with film crews attached to either Highway Patrol or RBT film crews spotted around the district over the weekend.
Both shows follow police officers as they go about their work, monitoring driver behaviour, conducting roadside testing and carrying out routine traffic enforcement across the region.
A full report from Deniliquin Highway Patrol was not available at the time of going to print yesterday.
Tennis champs return
Entries are now open for the 2026 Western Riverina Tennis Championships, to be hosted by the Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club across the Easter long weekend from April 3 to 6.
The tournament will be played on 12 natural grass courts and features a full program of open, graded, junior and veteran events. Entries close Friday, March 27, and must be submitted with payment.
Players can enter up to four events, with knockout entries required before tournament day.
Morning and afternoon tea, canteen and bar facilities will be available throughout the weekend, and visitors are encouraged to support the club’s accommodation sponsors.
Entry forms and enquiries can be directed to Tournament Secretary Dean Irwin on 0427 788 060 or deniliquintennis@gmail.com.
