During four decades of service, local volunteer Peter Hueston has amassed a collection of accolades.
In August of 1974, he became a volunteer for the Cobram SES Unit, a decision which led him to becoming a well-known and much-loved figure in local emergency services.
One achievement of Mr Hueston’s was his involvement in the Tocumwal Rescue Squad, an initiative he was a driving force behind which combined Tocumwal NSW SES, Cobram VICSES and Tocumwal NSW VRA all under one roof.
Mr Hueston has spent time in a number of roles within the SES, and has served as a volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service.
He has also aided the building of the first rescue HQ in Tocumwal with fellow members, and has, for years, used his own farm as the main training ground for local crews.
For his dedication, Mr Hueston has received six honours.
He has been awarded a VICSES Life Membership, a NSW SES 40 Years Service Medal, a NSW VRA 40 Years Service Medal, a NSW RFS 20 Years Service Medal, a VICSES 45 Years Service Medal, and a National Service Medal with 3rd Clasp.
VICSES Cobram unit controller Luke Herezo said the SES is lucky to have Mr Hueston on board.
“We are incredibly proud of Peter and all he has given to our unit and community over the past 50 years,” Mr Herezo said.
“His dedication, leadership, and generosity have shaped who we are today.”
Mr Hueston continues to volunteer, and has no plans to diminish his dedication.
He now spends his time passing on his wealth of knowledge to younger volunteers.
“Peter continues to inspire the next generation of volunteers with his wisdom and support,” Mr Herezo said.
“He’s a true legend, and we’re honoured to serve alongside him.”
