Katy Darmenia, Marcus Cox and their three children escaped after their home caught fire in the early hours of February 15, but lost all their belongings to the blaze.
The community has stood together to collect donations and money to help set the family members back on their feet, but now the Lions have also quietly stepped in to help.
With the family’s direction, the club has bought a new washing machine and fridge from Betta Home Goods in Cobram. The fridge arrived on March 4 with the washer to follow.
Katy Darmenia said when the fridge was delivered, she was incredibly overwhelmed and grateful.
“(I really) appreciate the Lions for the fridge and washing machine that was donated,” she said.
“It will help my family as it’s one less thing we don’t need to stress on how we will be able to afford it.”
Cobram Lions secretary Janet Austin said the club had an emergency disaster fund to purchase basic living essentials in situations just like this one.
“We do it because that’s what Lions do. We’re there to help people, if they’re in need we help them,” she said.
“If you’ve come out and you’ve got nothing, no clothing, no family backup, food, accommodation, medication, whitegoods ... it’s to get you by now and get you started.”
Ms Austin said the money had been raised by the Cobram community and was put aside and spent when disaster struck in a situation like this one.
“They can come to us or we hear about it ... then we contact the family to see what position they’re in and we go from there to what they need,” she said.
“”We just hope it helps them get back on their feet ... we say please don’t feel guilty for taking the money, it’s for you, it’s for anyone in the community who needs help.“
