State Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy said a future Liberal and Nationals government would deliver practical support to help children begin their education with the best possible chance of success.
The proposed Successful School Starters program would provide specialist assistance for Prep students by identifying learning and developmental needs early and linking families with assessment, referral and diagnosis services.
The Nationals MP said starting school was a significant milestone, and early intervention could make a lasting difference to a child’s learning journey.
“Every child should have the opportunity to reach their full potential from the moment they walk into a classroom,” he said.
“For many families, recognising that their child may need additional support is only the first step.
“Navigating the assessment process can be confusing and expensive, leaving parents unsure where to turn.
“This initiative will connect families with the right services sooner, helping children receive the support they need at a critical stage of their development.”
Under the plan, occupational therapists and speech pathologists would be integrated into Victoria's Primary School Nursing Program to assist with identifying potential learning and developmental concerns while providing advice to parents.
Students requiring further specialist assessment would also be eligible for a $500 subsidy towards their first specialist appointment, helping ease financial pressures on families.
The Successful School Starters program is part of the Liberals and Nationals' broader Excellence in Education Plan, aimed at delivering better outcomes for students, parents and teachers across Victoria.
