Much of the landscaping is commendable, but the ugly granite boulders certainly do not suit the surrounds and ambience of the native bushland.
They are ugly and resemble the entrance to a quarry.
I was a member of Cobram Barooga Apex Club when the club decided in the early 1970s to develop Thompsons Beach as a tourist attraction.
Since then, that decision has proved a winner for Cobram and district, with many outstanding events being held there, including several Peaches N Cream events, festivals, concerts, canoeing and national beach volleyball tournaments, to name some.
In my mind, Thompsons Beach is the major tourist attraction for Cobram-Barooga and is, possibly, the best beach along the whole Murray River.
Why destroy the peacefulness and ambience of the natural bushland with material that is completely foreign to the area?
There is no uniformity with these large boulders, whereas smaller uniform bollards would have been more suitable.
When public consultation was undertaken in 2022 by Moira Shire Council, the master plan did not detail the design of the bollards; therefore the public was never given the chance to comment or express an opinion on the material to be used.
In my opinion, a very serious mistake by council.
Council also advised that the granite bollards are a long-term asset that will reduce the cost of renewal of traditional bollards.
I have my doubts.
Did the designer understand that Thompsons Beach is on a floodplain and after a flood, there will be a massive clean-up to wash the silt from the boulders and maybe the boulders will have to be reset after floodwaters have washed the soil from under them?
