Calling all green thumbs, social butterflies, plant parents and locals, the Cobram Community Garden is looking for more volunteers to get involved.

Cobram Community Garden co-ordinator Paula Hansen said the garden was officially opened in 2009 as an initiative to involve schools, people at Killara House, and the wider community.
“We were granted some land at the back of the showgrounds, Moira Shire allocated some money for garden equipment and the Apex Club built the fence,” she said.
In the community garden, they grow seasonal vegetables and have a herb garden and garden beds.
“It’s great that we can grow food to support the community and put fresh vegetables on our share table for anyone to come and take if they need,” Paula said.

The ‘share table’ is located inside the door at the Cobram Community House, and they are thankful to Moira FoodShare which helps to keep it stocked as well.
Paula said one of the garden beds is for the Punt Rd Kindergarten, and they plant whatever they like in the plot.
“It’s lovely to be able to provide that space for community groups, playgroups and the kindergartens,” she said.
“The kids love sweeping too, they sweep up the leaves, and we have a family of cockatoos that drop berries on the ground all the time, so the kids love sweeping those up too.”
Paula said they also held a lot of community events in the garden.
“Last year, as part of seniors’ month, we had a gorgeous lunch in the garden, around 50 people came, and it was just a beautiful day,” she said.

“Every Thursday we have a ‘chatty cafe,’ which is just a gold coin donation, from 10.30am to 11.30am, where we’ll make anyone a cuppa with a cake or biscuit.
“We have a team of volunteers that run that and if you don’t know anyone, there’s always someone to chat to.
“What we’ve found is people come, they don’t know anyone and they’ve made friends.
“We also have a community lunch on the first Friday of every month which is also just a gold coin donation, it’s a meal that we prepare here, and anyone is welcome.”
The community garden currently only has three volunteers and are looking for more people to join.

“We had our open day last week and about 20 people came,” Paula said.
“There’s been quite a few that have expressed an interest in joining us, so hopefully they will.
“We meet every Wednesday morning at 10am to have a chat and keep the garden watered, weeded and planted.
“Anyone’s welcome to join us ... we'd welcome them with open arms.”
Paula said there were many benefits to getting involved in the community garden.
“You’re meeting people, you’re getting outside, and it’s social,” she said.
“It's lovely, it’s relaxing, and it’s just a nice thing to do.”
