A $76,600 subsidy from the Victorian Government will bolster various public security projects, with lighting set to be installed in seven locations across the Moira Shire, including Cobram's Levings Park and Federation Park.
Aimed at reducing vandalism and property damage, the visibility improvement work will be carried out by employees through the Working for Victoria program, which prioritises employment for Victorians impacted by the pandemic.
Moira Shire’s funding falls under the Community Safety Infrastructure Grants scheme, one of 31 projects sharing in more than $5.6 million as part of the government’s larger building works package.
Infrastructure general manager Andrew Close said the funding would help drive Operation Luminous, a lighting project being completed by Moira Shire.
“We are pleased to have been allocated $76,600 in the Victorian Government’s Community Safety Infrastructure Grant program for our project, Operation Luminous,” he said.
“Operation Luminous will light up Moira Shire’s parks and newly activated public precincts – places that have had numerous requests for maintenance due to vandalism and graffiti.
“The lights will activate the areas, increase passive surveillance from passers-by and park/toilet users, increase community confidence and deter potential offenders.
“Residents will have a better sense of safety as they will be able to better observe their surroundings.”
Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp applauded Moira Shire for successfully securing funding from the program.
“The Andrews Labor Government is proud to be partnering with Moira Shire to help increase public safety, as well as create employment opportunities for locals affected by the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.
“These grants recognise the importance of the community’s input in enhancing safety at a local level.”
