It might not be winter quite yet, but the Cobram-Barooga district rose on Thursday morning to a wall of fog.

Obscuring visibility along roads across the district, the low-lying cloud remained until about mid-morning, when it lifted and the blue sky returned.
The fog descended as part of a broader band of low-lying cloud from Wangaratta to Shepparton, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
“It was quite narrow, but quite long,” the BOM’s Dr Helen Reid said.
In Cobram, the fog peaked around 7am and was the result of a number of conditions.
“It’s really the amount of humidity that’s in the air,” Dr Reid said.

“It’s allowed that sweet spot for fog to form, where you’ve got just enough moisture, clearer skies above and the wind dropping out.”
With temperatures expected to drop to a maximum of 16°C on Saturday, the weekend will likely bring conditions conducive for either fog or even frost.
“Depending on where you are, you might get the fog, or you might get more down to a frost. We’re expecting that to be the case right through the weekend,” Dr Reid said.
“Quite often you’ll have a fog through of regions in the whole night, but quite often it’ll form in the hours around sunrise and lift later in the morning.”
