Australian and international designers are being encouraged to think outside the box, particularly in the popular Repurposed and Recycled Fabric Garment category, which debuted last year and returns with a $500 cash prize sponsored by the Greater Hume Council.
Entrants are to use vintage fabrics, old woollen blankets or discarded household textiles, provided garments are made from at least 70 per cent natural fibre.
Awards convenor Anne Maher said the innovation shown by designers recently had been exciting, with wool, cotton, linen and silk repurposed into striking contemporary garments.
“In previous years, we’ve seen everything from velvet curtains and cotton quilts to tea towels and doilies transformed into coats, dresses and men’s wear,” Mrs Maher said.
The 21st annual awards will feature prizes valued at around $5500, including a $1000 supreme garment award and a Bernina 325 sewing machine.
Additional categories recognise knitted and crocheted garments, millinery, accessories and student designers.
Fashion parades will be held in the Country Lifestyle Pavilion at 1pm on Tuesday, September 22 and Wednesday, September 23, with the final parade at 11am on Thursday, September 24.
Winners will be announced at 1.30pm.
The Henty Natural Fibre Fashion Awards are free to enter and open to designers of all ages and experience levels.
