The Central Murray Group of the Country Women’s Association held its autumn conference in Cobram on March 2 with members gathering to plan for the coming year and enjoy some friendly company.

The group covers the areas of Cobram, Nathalia, Youanmite and Bulkamaugh.
Traditionally thought of as an old-fashioned group, CWA state president Pam Mawson said being part of the association offered a great deal of benefits to all members.
“I think first of all its friendship and then what we can do for our communities, the big community is one,” she said.
“From getting involved in making things to going out to schools and helping in some art programs, teaching knitting ... helping with their breakfast programs.
“I think what you get from giving is as much as you keep to yourself in some ways, it’s got a reciprocal arrangement.”
Leading the team: Group president-elect Kate Ismail, group president Helen Christie and state president Pam Mawson.

Kate Ismail, who was named group president-elect at the meeting, joined the Nathalia branch for social connection eight years ago while she was a stay-at-home mum.
“I went along there once a month and formed some friendships and then there was an opportunity to expand and open up the Tallygaroopna group and I’ve been part of (that) since,” she said.
Ms Ismail said the CWA’s most important aspect to her was the friendship and support that let her know “there’s someone out there that can help’’.
“A lot of our groups run scholarship programs for schools where we raise money throughout the year and then give it towards schools or struggling families,” she said.
“We’ve got members ranging from their 20s right through to in their 90s, so it’s for all ages.
“We also have junior members as well, which is for school-aged children.
“I hope to see many more members coming in and being able to expand, more involvement and running more events and being able to help out the community.”
