A group of enthusiastic singers, including Marj Saines and Mary Macqueen, were keen to start a singing group in Corowa in 2009 so they approached Colin Slater, the National Director and founding member of Sing Australia, to help create the Sing Australia Corowa group.
For the first year Joy Wilkins, the conductor and Pauline McLaughlan and Helen Hayes, the accompanists, travelled from Albury Wodonga to lead our group in singing. Then in 2010 Robyn Moore and Kerrie Ormond took over the role of conductor and Christine Byrne became our pianist.
Robyn Moore continues in the role as conductor with the assistance of Wendy Caramario.
The singers have been privileged to have wonderful pianists to accompany them over the years, including Christine Byrne, Annie, David and Angela Craft and in 2013 Anne Morley joined the group and continues to play with the assistance of Anne Westcott.
Leaders of the group included Mary Macqueen, Dotty Watkins, Marj Saines, Margaret Gillick and our current leader is Belinda Monte.
Kate Roberts, with the assistance from Mauread Conroy continues in the role as treasurer. Janne McKechnie has been the group's “fabulous” catering officer for the entire 15 years.
“The philosophy of Sing Australia is to bring Australians together in a supportive and encouraging way, to experience the joy of singing, having fun and bringing happiness to others,” Robyn Moore from Sing Australia Corowa said.
“Over the last fifteen years, the members of our group have regularly held practices at the Odd Fellows Hall and performed at many gigs such as the annual Anzac Services, Christmas carols at many venues, annual concerts and entertained the residents at Karinya, the Corowa Hospital Aged Care and Glenview in Rutherglen and performed at many other events.
“Corowa Sing Australia appreciates the support given to them by the Federation Council and Corowa community groups.
“There is a wide and varied song list, from several songbooks, that we can choose from when practising for an event,” Ms Moore said.
This April, Sing Australia Corowa is hosting an Anzac Concert in conjunction with the Wahgunyah Progress Society at the Wahgunyah School of Arts Hall on Sunday, 21 st April at 2pm.
Corowa Sing Australia members meet at the Oddfellows Hall on Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Everyone is welcome to come and join us in the joy of singing.
