Cobram one of Victoria's most expensive towns for fuel

Cobram has been listed as one of the of the most expensive towns in regional Victoria to buy petrol, according to the RACV. The investigation surveyed 27 regional towns across Victoria and Melbourne suburbs to find the cheapest and most expensive locations throughout the 2018-19 financial year. The research found the average price for unleaded petrol was 146.9c in Cobram, slightly more expensive than Mildura and Echuca, but cheaper than neighbouring Yarrawonga, and four cents cheaper on average than the state’s most expensive town to buy fuel — Ararat. Benalla took out the title for cheapest place to buy petrol in Victoria, with an average litre of petrol costing 131.7c in the town, while drivers paid 139.4c/litre for unleaded in Shepparton. RACV’s vehicle engineering manager Michael Case said pricing differences simply came down to competition. ‘‘In one word, it’s competition; in two words, it’s local competition,’’ he said. ‘‘In highly-competitive local areas when one petrol retailer cuts their prices, other local competitors follow.’’
