Cobram-Barooga's Relay for Life will return this year to continue fighting for a future free from cancer.
Organisers are already encouraging locals to save the date for the vital bi-annual event, which will be held in November.
Chair manager for the local organising committee Amanda Chadwick said relays in surrounding regions had sadly shut down in recent years.
“Benalla, Yarrawonga, Shepparton and Wangaratta have stopped. But we hope people from these surrounding districts will still feel they can come participate in our relay,” she said.
“We're just a small committee locally, but we're working hard to keep the event alive.”
Ms Chadwick has been involved in each relay since it started in Cobram-Barooga five years ago - initially as an annual event.
“I lost my mother to pancreatic cancer so I wanted to get involved and give back,” she said.
“Everyone has been touched by cancer, so this overnight event is a good chance to celebrate, remember people and fight back. This is why we relay.
“It's also a chance to promote prevention and education and hopefully contribute to a cure. Plus it's a lot of fun.”
Ms Chadwick said locals had brainstormed a number of clever fundraising ideas throughout the years, including bogan bingo, trivia nights and morning teas.
Last year's relay raised more than $42 000 for Cancer Council, with this year's goal to gather another $40 000 from at least 10 teams.
“We get around 120 people involved each year. When we started, we had up to 16 teams,” she said.
“You can register a team or join onto another team if you can't get enough people together to form your own.
“Registration is open until the day.”
The Cobram-Barooga Relay for Life is on November 14 and 15 at the Cobram Showgrounds.
The event sees team members take turns walking around a track or designated path.
Each event is six to 24 hours in length and each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps.
