A car reportedly crashed into pedestrian railing on a traffic island in Napier St, outside Edward River Library, about 6.08pm.
The impact damaged poles and posts, and tore the vehicle’s bumper away.
Witnesses say the car, which they report immediately drove away from the scene toward Deniliquin’s north, may have had fogged up windows.
Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW Acting Captain Les Booth said firefighters were called to provide HAZMAT services.
They cleared oil and coolant from the roadway, and removed as much debris as possible to make the area safe for traffic.
It was the second call-out for brigade members on Friday.
They were also called to Deniliquin Hospital about 2.07pm hen an automatic fire alarm was triggered.
There was no fire on investigation.
It is believed maintenance work triggered the alarm.
