Carers’ wellbeing forum in Shepparton

A carers’ wellbeing forum in Shepparton will provide information on services available in the region for those who care for others to look after themselves.

Carers make up almost 11 per cent of Australia’s population and provide more than 40 hours a week of unpaid care to family members and friends who live with chronic disease or terminal illness.

Murray Primary Health Network chief executive Matt Jones said taking on a caring role could present significant changes to a person’s life.

“Ensuring you are well-supported as a carer is integral to maintaining a healthy life, as well as your responsibilities in caring for your loved one,” Mr Jones said.

“Caring can be physically and emotionally challenging, but support is available to help you to prioritise your own wellbeing.”

FamilyCare carer support services team leader Jason Watts said his colleagues were available to understand the needs of carers.

“Being a carer can be challenging, rewarding, frustrating, confusing and overwhelming; sometimes all in the one day,” he said.

“We provide carers with the information, supports and services to assist them in their caring role and support them to have time for themselves.”

The free information session is presented by Murray PHN in partnership with FamilyCare at Goulburn Valley Hospice, 102 Balaclava Rd, Shepparton, at 10.30am on Thursday, October 27.
