The walk is a Victorian Government campaign that Moira Shire Council takes part in annually, supporting primary schools and communities to make active travel easy, safe and accessible while promoting regular physical activity and helping children and their families establish active routines for life.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, just over one in five (22.6 per cent) children aged two to 17 in Victoria were overweight or obese in 2017-18, down from 28.6 per cent in 2014-15, indicating campaigns such as Walk to School are helping reduce child obesity across the state.
Already, across the shire, students have taken part in a walk in Yarrawonga.
The event saw council officers put stencils of animal prints and arrows on footpaths through the shire to encourage children and parents to walk to school or kindergarten.
After the walk, the droves of marching children made the trek down to Kennedy Park to jump on the bouncy castle, play with the giant board games and get their faces painted to round out the morning’s fun.
“It was a marvellous event and we love participating it every year,” Moira Shire mayor Libro Mustica said.
