Federation Council was successful in obtaining an $80,000 grant through the NSW Department of Primary Industries Recreational Fishing Trust for works in the Kyffin's Reserve.
This successful grant project will link to the strategic plan to maintain and improve aquatic, recreational and other community facilities to meet the needs of residents.
The July ordinary council meeting agenda states the Kyffin's Reserve boat ramp project is a central infrastructure project that will enhance access for recreational fishing to occur in a safer and more controlled environment.
Councillor Andrew Kennedy said works need to be done to enhance safety for those who use the area as well as residents that live close by.
“I rode my bike out there recently and there is drastically needed works to be done as it’s like speed humps into the lake,” Cr Kennedy said.
“It will be good to get it cleaned up as it’s a bit of a fire hazard if a fire was ever to go through there.
“It is also a bit of a worry being so close to town so it will be good to see some work done out there.”
The installation of a concrete boat ramp will also ensure that the space is accessible to a broader cross-section of the community.
Improvements of this nature will support the growth of recreational fishing and help support the local economy increasing visitation and retail spend and support growing tourism.
The community involvement and letter of support from the Corowa Anglers Club and also the Southwest Anglers Association was a positive collaboration.
At present the fisherman launch boats from different areas so having a defined concrete ramp will improve launching at Kyffin's Reserve and safety for recreational anglers.
Director of the Lake Mulwala Cod Classic and owner of Fish, Camp and Ski Tony Bennett said it’s a great outcome for the many anglers who come to fish Lake Mulwala.
“Having a proper boat ramp at Kyffin’s Reserve will give anglers great access to one of the best fishing areas of the lake,” Mr Bennett said.
“If you don’t launch at Kyffin’s, it’s a mighty job to cross the lake and fish this area especially if you are not familiar with the layout of the lake.
“It will also take pressure off numerous other Mulwala ramps at peak times.”
