When Benalla Lion David Lowing was looking for a way to give the local Lions Club a presence in Bridge St East, he spotted the old, dilapidated noticeboard fixed to the wall outside Newspower.
When making inquiries with fellow Lions into how old that noticeboard was, the most accurate response was that it had been there since the 1970s, possibly earlier.
So, in the spirit of giving back to the community, which Lions Clubs are known for, president Peter Brown approached Benalla Woodworkers Association president Mike Kyval to see what could be done.
“The old one had been up there for a long time,” Peter said.
“So me and David (Lowing) met with Mike (Kyval) and he said it was something the Woodies could make.”
The new noticeboard features a Lions International logo, and an inscription confirming it was made by the Benalla Woodworkers.
Within the wooden frame there is a pinboard, with pins available for any local person to use.
Peter said he hoped this one lasted another 50 years.
“Giving back to the community is what the Lions Club is all about,” he said.
“It’s a local project, for local people.”
Peter said the project showed the benefit of volunteer-run organisations in Benalla, such as Lions and the Woodies.
“The noticeboard is there for people to use, so we hope they do,” he said.
