This draft four-year strategy outlines council’s proposed priorities to support local producers, strengthen towns, grow year-round tourism, build skills and education, and attract new business investment.
It sets the foundation for sustainable growth and a thriving local economy.
Moira Shire’s economy continues to grow, with recent data showing a gross regional product of $2.3 billion and economic output of $5 billion in 2024 across key industries.
This positive path is accompanied by challenges, including the recent announcement of the Bega Strathmerton facility closure.
Council says these developments reinforce the importance of having a clear and proactive economic development strategy to strengthen resilience, guide investment and support long-term regional prosperity.
The draft strategy is built around five strategic priorities designed to advance the region’s prosperity and resilience.
Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson said the strategy was a forward-thinking plan to support local businesses and unlock new opportunities.
“Whether it’s a bustling retail or service precinct, a passionate sole-trader or a large-scale enterprise, every business contributes to our region’s success,” he said.
“With more than 3000 registered businesses calling Moira Shire home, this strategy is about empowering them to grow, create jobs and invest in our future.“
Recent data highlights Moira Shire’s strong economic performance, with unemployment rates dropping from three per cent in 2021 to 1.3 per cent in 2024, outperforming the state and national rates.
The region’s tourism has also been booming, with the shire attracting an average of 637,000 domestic visitors annually, including 399,000 overnight stays and 238,000 day-trips, with each visit contributing an average of $380 to the local economy.
“We encourage everyone to read the draft and share their feedback,” Dr Emonson said.
“Your voice will help guide the next wave of growth.”
