A treat sure to tantalise the taste buds — and the latest creation by Hungie Fangs co-owners Damien Gow and Lina Galati to claim a gold medal in a national baking competition.
This month, the bakery’s ‘Rustic Rabbit’ pie took out first place in the gourmet game pie section of the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.
Mr Gow said he grew up eating his grandfather’s rabbit stew, a meal popular during the lean times of the Great Depression, while camping with his family.
“We thought we’d just bring it back to the general Aussie flavour, and we thought, well, Depression era, it was rabbits, rabbit stews and that sort of thing,” Mr Gow said.

“So we went down that line and came up with a nice hearty rich rabbit stew, full of root vegetables. Then we were playing around with it for a week or so, and we came up with the idea to add the figs and the walnuts. We put those into the stew, and it just made a world of difference.”
The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition is one of the most prestigious baking competitions of the year, fielding over 1500 entries from bakeries across Australia.
Significantly for Damien and Lina, Hungie Fangs this year enjoyed its best performance at the competition, going home with a record three entries — the Rustic Rabbit pie, the Drover’s Breaky pie and the Sticky Chilli Chicken roll — landing in the top five in their respective sections.
Nothing seems to be stopping the power couple, who two months ago claimed first place at the National Donut Competition for their cinnamon donut.
