Held this Sunday, March 13, from 10am at Scotts Oval in Cobram, the family-friendly event will feature races and kids activities with something for everyone.
Funds raised from the event will go to the local Apex Club, which will distribute the money back into the community, according to Apex member Scooter Gleeson.
“We distribute the funds through the community for projects and bits and pieces ... we’ll have lunchtime activities for kids, a raffle, barbecue ... good little family day out,” he said.
“We’ll have 30-plus mowers from all over the state ... we get them from West Gippsland, some come from lower New South Wales ... we’re basically the start of the season.”
The Australian Ride On Lawn Mower Racing Association (AROLMA) holds regular races around the country, where competitors race specially-tuned ride-on lawnmowers.
The sport was dreamt up during an alcohol-fuelled argument in a Harrietville pub in 1988, where five men raced unmodified lawnmowers around an impromptu track.
Today, mowers are fitted with motorbike engines by their owners and can reach speeds of over 100km/h — but don’t worry, all blades and cutting equipment are removed.
Races are held everywhere including at larger motoring events like Summernats, but most are held on ovals or disused paddocks.
“We’re hoping to have 500 (people come along) sort of mark ... basically four hours of racing, generally a pretty good time,” Mr Gleeson said.
The event will be held at Scotts Oval in Cobram from 10am, with a gold coin donation entry fee for fundraising.
