South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas says Police Commissioner Grant Stevens will start the role from December 9 on a five-year contract.
Mr Stevens will become the 37th Governor of South Australia, replacing Frances Adamson, who declined to extend her term for another five years.
Mr Stevens joined the South Australian Police force in 1982 and has become Australia's longest-serving police commissioner, taking up the role in 2015.
The new governor was recognised for his leadership in addressing organised crime, terrorism, cybercrime, domestic violence and road safety as a police officer, while also being state co-ordinator during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Stevens' tenure as police commissioner was marred by tragedy in 2023, when his 18-year-old son Charlie died after being hit by a car in a hit-and-run.
The police chief and his wife became strong advocates for organ donation following their son's death, while continuing a longstanding commitment to cancer research.
Mr Malinauskas said Mr Stevens understood South Australia and its people after leading with integrity, sound judgment and an an unwavering sense of duty.
"I have every confidence Grant will be an outstanding governor," he said.
"His ability to connect with people, his steady leadership and his understanding of our community will serve South Australia exceptionally well."
Mr Stevens said he was deeply honoured by the appointment.
"Serving the people of South Australia as a police officer has been the privilege of my working life," he said.
"As governor, I will bring that same commitment to service, together with a deep respect for the constitutional responsibilities and impartiality of the office."
