Ben started an apprenticeship with Cobram Electrical and Data in February which will help him gain his qualification.
The business provides Ben with hands on training one day a week as part of his VCE studies.
“I've really enjoyed my time there so far, they are all a bunch of really great blokes who have similar interests,” he said.
A typical day for Ben starts at 7 am where he is appointed a job to attend with an A-grade electrician.
As part of his two year apprenticeship, Ben has completed jobs across the Moira Shire, including in Cobram, Barooga, Berrigan, Strathmerton, Katunga, and as far as past Wangaratta.
“The school-based apprenticeship subject takes up a whole day and I have free periods during the week to catch up on things I've missed out on,” he said.
“A family friend of mine is an A-grade electrician and he really enjoys it.
“I've done some work with him before this apprenticeship which made me lean towards getting this qualification.”
Ben said he enjoyed the variety of work at CED.
“One day you'll be doing something basic and the next you're doing something more difficult, it's good to learn about things I don't know about,” he said.
“I like that it's never the same thing and you're not stuck in an office.”
CED operations manager Trish Wooden said the business started taking on school-based apprentices about two years ago.
“Ben is doing fantastic and we’ve found it brings life skills on earlier, it teaches them communication and to be proactive,” she said.
“Our team takes them under our wing and we're really keen to teach them.”
