The Junior Rural State Championships were held at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve on March 27 and 28.
The Strathmerton junior team was made up of two teams with a total of nine members.
Hannah Logie, Amy Hibberson, Mitch Easden and Thomas Payne competed in the 11 to 15-year-old age group and Amy Payne, Brylie Barnes, Harrison Barnes, Connor Ciccone and Matt Hibberson competed in the 11 to 13-year-old age group.
In a combined total of aggregate points from both teams, the juniors won champion team with a total of 66 points.
Napoleons-Enfield finished in second place with 64 points and Springhurst in third place with 49 points.
The State Rural Championships and local rural competitions consists of five events with a trailer to replicate local fire trucks.
Each event is made up of skills required on the fire ground, including hose bowling, branch attachments and pumping of water.
“It is a great opportunity for juniors to participate in these championships as it gives them an understanding of what CFA volunteers do on the fire ground and it also teaches themleadership respect and teamwork,” Strathmerton junior team coach Bill Logie said.
“Being that last year was cancelled due to COVID-19, everyone was very excited and enthusiastic about the championships this year.”
The 11 to 15-year-old team placed first in the hydrant and tanker event at 26.03 seconds and in the tanker drawing water from tank event at 20.18 seconds.
The team placed second in wet hose and ladder with a time of 21.73 and second in tanker priming and ladder with a time of 26.34 seconds, 0.16 seconds behind first-placed Springhurst.
The team finished with 52 points.
The 11 to 13-year-old team placed second in wet hose and ladder at 23.21 seconds and fourth in hydrant and tanker.
The team had a total of 14 points landing them in fifth place.
Both junior teams were coached by Allison Easden, Rachael Payne and Bill Logie.
