For 36 years, he has been training kelpie dogs and together with his partner Anneke Homan, he runs the Beloka Kelpies stud in Welshpool, Gippsland.
For farmers, a good working dog can be the key to success.
Working dogs must move through paddocks and yards, while owners maintain control.
However, many farmers do not have the knowledge or structure to train their own dogs.
This can lead to behavioural issues or simply not getting the most out of their working dog.
Beloka Kelpies can assist.
They specialise in training courses for farmers who require skills on how to train and control their working dogs.
They have experience with all types of working dogs including rescue dogs and problem dogs.
They have worked with dogs of all ages from 14-week-old puppies to old dogs.
Over the years they have retrained and re-homed many rescue dogs, working together with the Australian Working Dog Rescue Inc and Lort Smith.
They have also developed a program for schools and students and offer specialised school camps typically for Year 5 and 6 students.
Their way of teaching has been proven not only in a farm situation, but also with great success in all sorts of trials: yard, field and utility with sheep, cattle and ducks.
While based in Gippsland, in recent years they have relished the opportunity to engage with farmers from across northern Victoria at Elmore Field Days and are looking forward to doing so again this year.
At this year’s Elmore Field Days they will be offering structured demonstrations on how dogs work and how to train them.
There will be a focus on how to control dogs’ instincts and allow them to work.
They will also have young dogs available to sell on the day and are open to talking about farmers about their needs.
