The competition, on Wednesday, September 4, at Cobram showgrounds, is open to anyone aged 16 and 19 on the day of the competition.
It involves three stages, including the submission of resume, before an interview with two judges and a two-minute speech answering the question of, ‘Is volunteering in your local community important?’
Entrants will be judged on a number of criteria including community involvement and communication skills.
Local dairy farmer Amabel Grinter is the co-ordinator of the competition.
Ms Grinter has won both the Cobram Show Rural Ambassador Award as well as the junior ambassador and believes the competition was a perfect way for young people to improve their speaking skills as well as their job prospects.
‘‘Some people go to a job interview and it’s the first interview they ever have,’’ Ms Grinter said.
‘‘This competition is something which gives people a real leg up when it comes to that.
‘‘It helps improve your public speaking skills and is something which can really help when you’re applying for scholarship opportunities at university.’’
Ms Grinter recommended people put together a resume for the competition including work experience, school awards, community involvement and participation in sporting clubs.
Cobram Agricultural Show Society president Karen Creighton was keenly anticipating the chance to showcase some of the region’s bright young personalities.
‘‘The Cobram Show Society is pleased and excited to start this competition again,’’ she said.
‘‘We really want to offer something for the community and we also hope people who participate in this competition will come back and be involved in the Cobram Show Society.’’
The winner progresses to the Goulburn Valley Riverina Group stage. From there, ambassadors from 12 shows across the region will compete to earn a place at the state final.
