Cobram’s young soccer talent has helped secure a grand final win for a regional representative team in a soccer championship on the weekend.
Four locals — Joshua Koopman, Zac Mcleod, Michael Demaio and Hamish Sweeny — were part of the Albury Wodonga Football League’s under-16 representative side contesting the finals of the 2017 Bathurst Cup on the weekend.
Fifty teams from across NSW and the ACT contested the cup, which was run over two days with teams in under-13, under-14, under-15 and under-16 divisions.
They started out with great results against strong opposition, including teams from Bathurst, Blacktown, Belconnen and Sutherland Shire.
In their Sunday semi-final against Wagga, the AWFA under-16s took the win, 2-1, featuring a beautiful long shot by Demaio and a Martin Miranda (Wodonga Diamonds) free kick in the last minute to win the game.
They then faced a strong Belconnen United in the grand final, taking the honours with a decisive 2-0 win, thanks to goals from McLeod and Sweeney.
