Ruby Svarc joined her sister Cathy at the Lions ahead of the 2021 season with pick No.38 in the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft after she impressed selectors with her speed.
The 28-year-old’s persistence and patience finally paid off this year when she made her AFLW debut in Round 3 of the 2022 season against Carlton.
Prior to being drafted by Brisbane, Ruby played for Essendon in the Women's VFL, but had a long netball history playing A Grade level for Corowa Rutherglen.
Ruby played in a number of positions across the ground this year, providing the Lions with added versatility and depth, amassing 10 games and averaging 6.8 disposals.
Ruby’s best performance came in Round 8 against West Coast where she gathered a career-high 11 disposals and gained 338 metres.
While the Lions’ campaign ended in a heartbreaking Preliminary Final loss to the Demons, the versatile speedster made the most of her opportunity, holding her position for most of the season, despite not always getting to play her preferred role on the wing.
Meanwhile, older sister Cathy has signed a two-year contract to remain with the Lions until 2024.
Cathy, widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the competition, made her debut in the Lions’ round 1 game against Adelaide at Hickey Park in February 2020.
She played an integral role in the Lions stunning win over the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Park in April last year securing the club’s first premiership.
A physiotherapist by trade, she has since played 30 games averaging 10.6 disposals.
At this years Best and Fairest awards, Cathy received the Trademark Award, voted by her teammates as the player who best represented the teams’ virtues on and off the field.
With 18 wins and 5 losses in the last two years, the Lions remain one of the most consistent teams since the inaugural AFLW season in 2017. The Svarc sisters will no doubt play an integral role in the Lions season 7 campaign.
With pre-season now underway, the AFLW competition commences August 25-27, 2022.
