The Saturday competition runs until the end of March, with a break during the Christmas school holidays.
Cobram junior tennis committee member Carolyn Cassidy said players from across the region came to Cobram to play on its 16 grass courts.
“Junior tennis has been going on for a long, long time in Cobram,” she said.
“We aim to promote tennis in this region and keep kids active over summers and it is an alternative to cricket.
“We draw on a large area from Katamatite to Jerilderie and Berrigan and our aim is to give children the opportunity to develop their tennis skills by playing against each other in a supportive environment.
“We are able to use this magnificent facility and we have to keep memberships up to keep it going.”
The club has four grades - from hot shots for beginners, through to a new premier grade for those close to playing tournament tennis.
“We try and cater for all levels from five years old through to 16 years old,” Cassidy said.
“Last year, we introduced a hot shots program which introduces children to tennis through tennis games and ball and racquet skills.
“We have had A and B-grade for many years, B-grade is for learning about match play and A-grade is for proficient players who are able to score and self-umpire.
“We have found we have older players who a looking for more competitive play and that is why we have introduced a premier grade play this year, which will cater for those moving towards tournament play and graduating to pennant tennis.”
Tennis coach Greg Duns and his staff will oversee the program and Cassidy said his involvement opened up other opportunities for local players.
“Greg has worked with us for a few years, he is a very experienced coach who coaches in Yarrawonga,” Cassidy said.
“Through Greg, we have set up two dates during the season where we will have interclub competition with Yarrawonga, which will give the children the opportunity to play on different courts and against different opponents.”
