BreastScreen van back to offer free screens

One of BreastScreen Victoria’s mobile screening vans will visit Yarrawonga to offer free breast screens from next Monday, August 15 to Friday, October 14.
The van last visited Yarrawonga in 2020, and people who are due for a breast screen will be invited to attend this important health check.
It’s recommended that women aged between 50 and 74 have a breast screen every two years. Regular screening is the best way to find breast cancer early—before symptoms present and when treatment is most likely to be successful.
Breast screens are with a female radiographer in a safe and friendly environment and take just 10 minutes. There’s no need for a doctor’s referral or Medicare card.
COVID-19 safety measures are in place on the van, such as physical distancing, to protect both the community and staff.
Unless they are exempt, all clients who screen on the van in Yarrawonga must wear a face mask. BreastScreen Victoria’s CEO Rita Butera encourages eligible people, 50–74 years of age from Yarrawonga and surrounds to screen on the van while it’s in the area.
“We have two mobile screening service vans that travel around the state throughout the year. Our visit to Yarrawonga is aimed at ensuring women in every part of Victoria have access to potentially life-saving mammograms," Ms Butera said.
“The vans use the same high-quality digital radiography machines as our permanent clinics so everyone can get the best possible care, wherever they live.”
The van will be located at the carpark between Lakeview Motel and Ritchies Supa IGA.
Appointments for the Yarrawonga van can be made online at breastscreen.org.au or by calling 13 20 50.
Social club’s buddy benches
The Tungamah Social Club are at it again, offering support to the local community anyway they can, this time in the way of Buddy Benches for Sacred Heart Primary School and Tungamah Primary School.
Many schools in Australia have installed buddy benches. These playground benches are intended to provide a safe place in the playground for students who have no one to play with.
If school children are by themselves, they simply walk over to the Buddy Bench and take a seat.
The idea is that other children or teachers will notice the student on the bench and offer assistance. A buddy bench can also act as a peace area where kids can retreat to.
Retired Tungamah resident Noel Menner, who is a keen supporter of the Tungamah Social Club, offered to make the hand-crafted Buddy Benches for the schools.
Noel is a dab hand at woodwork, and this, combined with his creativity and use of recycled materials, allow him to create very unique buddy benches.
Sacred Heart received their buddy bench painted in the school’s signature colours, whilst Tungamah Primary School’s bench will be in pastel tones.
Social Club President Greg Ford said that the social club are pleased to be able to offer these benches to the local schools and is very grateful for Noel’s effort and continued support of the club.
Greg said Noel’s donations to the Social Club’s Good Friday Appeal have been amazing.
His donated woodwork creations have included, picnic seats, chairs, tables, rabbit hutches, bird feeders and plant holders.
“Noel is a very generous bloke who just wishes to help out others and share his talents,” Greg said.
“The Social Club are lucky to have his ongoing support.”

Over 100 family members, friends and Lions watched and encouraged students from Tungamah, Tocumwal, Strathmerton, Katamatite, Jerilderie, Cobram, Barooga and Yarrawonga schools.
There were 16 students who attended and competed for two levels of public speaking.

Freemasons news
To many of the voluntary non-profit and charity organisations, groups and clubs located in Yarrawonga Mulwala, the pandemic has taken a toll on the memberships, with medical, isolation and family restrictions imposed during the last two and a half years.
Recovery may be slow and cautious as the area bounds back to normal routines however, some may be reaching a point of no return.
In Masonry, members are awarded a special badge called the United Badge (it was called rule 86).
The governing body has declared that by adopting the principles of the craft, mark and chapter, the member has completed full entry into Freemasonry.
For those seeking further knowledge in Freemasonry there are other orders and rites.
Unfortunately during the above time, the core membership of Yarrawonga Mark Lodge transferred to Wangaratta Mark Lodge, to support this area with this element in Freemasonry.
The club invite any unaffiliated or affiliated Freemasons now residing in Yarrawonga Mulwala to either attend the meetings, reaffirm or enquire by contacting direct to Freemasons Victoria (Melbourne) at www.freemasonsvic.net.au or yarrawongalodge103@gmail.com.
