In efforts to keep residents reading during isolation, Berrigan Shire libraries are changing with the times.
Responses to the new efforts of the library staff has been nothing but positive so far, with residents delighted by receiving their new reading material.
Berrigan Shire library co-ordinator Anne Nevins said the library has started utilising its Facebook pages with online tutorials for arts and crafts and for showcasing the vast range of books available.
“The online world is increasing. We have recently installed StoryBox and IndyReads and a very new concept – the Online Book Club. We have been surprised by the uptake,” she said.
“Residents are embracing the new online world. The library staff are aware that our patrons who love to read a print book were missing their reading materials and the opportunity to chat and choose their items.
“Although all current loans had been extended to June 30 to allow three months for the COVID-19 to dissipate — most patrons needed more materials and we were given the opportunity to deliver by NSW Government regulations if we practised safe distancing and if patrons were prepared for staff to choose their items.
“Staff phoned patrons asking if they were interested in receiving a delivery of items and set a delivery time to ensure patrons were aware of the delivery and items were not sitting for extended times at their front door.
“Most patrons are very happy to receive deliveries. They are also able to request particular titles and authors if they are available.”
Berrigan Shire libraries are offering a new service that should allow avid readers yet another avenue to get their heads into their favourite books.
“Last week, we have been informed that we have permission to allow ‘Click and Collect’ to occur at each branch,” Ms Nevins said.
“Therefore patrons will be able to visit the library, but go no further than the foyer at all branches, with the exception of Tocumwal library – where patrons may only enter into the library as far as the front desk.
“Patrons will be able to request books, DVDs, magazines or large print and the staff member at their branch will choose and process.”
