The Victorian Government planning to eradicate 150 000 potholes, upgrade 1800 km of roads and trim 30 000 km of roadside vegetation across the next two years as a part of its $870 million road maintenance blitz.
Moira Shire received just under $2.1 million in combined funding from the State Government and the council for its four projects, including the Cotton’s Rd widening project in Cobram East, crest upgrades along Boomahnoomoonah Rd in Wilby, upgrades to Gilmore St in Yarrawonga and the reconstruction project of Walsh’s Bridge Rd in Kaarimba.
Premier Daniel Andrews and Roads Minister Jaala Pulford launched the program last week, with $653.5 million for resurfacing, reparation and rebuilding of Victorian roads.
‘‘This massive investment will fix the roads Victorians rely on every day and get people home safer and sooner, wherever they live,’’ Mr Andrews said.
The investment is in addition to this year’s annual road maintenance investment of $216 million.
‘‘We know how important suburban and country roads are for families getting to work or taking their kids to school,’’ Ms Pulford said.
‘‘That’s why over the coming months you’ll see crews fixing and repairing the roads that need it most.’’
About 100 workers will work on Melbourne roads every night, with 1100 construction jobs expected to be created during the works.
The program will also repair and replace damaged signage and safety barriers.
The funds build on the $87.2 million going towards rebuilding rural roads, with regional councils announcing 133 projects as part of round two of the Fixing Country Roads program.
‘‘From fixing potholes to the biggest projects Victoria has ever seen, we’re building a better transport network for all Victorians,’’ Mr Andrews said.
