The VCE Leadership Awards recognise and celebrate the efforts of VCE students in promoting leadership and participation in their school and local community. The VCE Leadership Awards are open to government, Catholic and independent school students.
To be in contention for the award, students were required to submit a written application about what sort of leadership they had demonstrated in their wider community and their school. This was followed by an interview process before the winners were chosen.
Miss Jones said it was an honour to receive the accolade, however she didn't want to let it distract from the intent of her leadership qualities.
“It is nice to have the recognition for being a leader, but that is not what I am motivated by,” she said.
“A lot of my leadership is about making sure everyone else can grow with me and that it is not just one person leading from the front but pulling everyone up from the front with you.
“So although it is nice recognition to have, it is definitely not why I got involved in the first place.”
Miss Jones has a myriad of options open to her as she approaches the end of her secondary school journey, and the young leader has a strong desire to help shape the world around her.
“I have a real keen interest in going into policy,” Miss Jones said.
“I am still deciding what type of policy but I feel the leadership skills I have gained through doing school leadership, as well as community leadership, has helped me to understand how I want to impact people with what I do.”
