The Tigers have taken out the GVHA B-Grade premiership in the first year of every decade since 1990 (winning the 1990, 2000, and 2010 seasons) and the club is hopeful the 2020 season will provide a similar level of success.
The club also won the trifecta from 2012-2014 as well as back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018.
Vautier comeback king in Benalla tennis title match
And with just three weeks remaining until this year’s hockey season kicks off, the local club is busy honing the skills of its men’s, women’s and junior teams under strict COVID-19 restrictions.
Benalla Hockey president Lee Manning said the club would love to hear from anyone interested in playing this year, particularly for its men’s team, with numbers lighter than expected.
Manning said enthusiasm was the only requirement for new players, with players currently easing back into training following months on the sidelines.
“I think many of us are concentrating on fitness at the moment, after such an interesting year,” Manning said.
“There’s a perception that hockey is hard to play and expensive, but it really isn’t.
“Our main aim is to have fun and enjoy playing sport, but a few premierships are always nice too.”
Alternative junior football season likely for Benalla
The club has equipment available for those interested in playing, while training is free for the first three weeks. Fees are also expected to be lower this year.
Junior training runs from 4.30 to 5.30 pm on Thursday, with seniors following from 5.45 to 6.45 pm at Churchill Reserve. Training will continue to run through the school holidays.
