Join hands around Lake Benalla to fight MND

By Simon Ruppert

Organisers of this year’s annual Act to D-Feet MND have something special planned for Benalla.

In a record-breaking attempt they hope to get at least 3672 people to holds hands around Lake Benalla to let the rest of Australia know what is happening here - and what a wonderful and supportive community Benalla is.

Organising committee member Robyn Smith said in a show of respect for the CFA, and the recent weather conditions, the event had been moved to Sunday, April 19.

“So this year the hands around Lake Benalla will not only raise awareness of, and funds for, MND,” Ms Smith said.

“It will also be in appreciation of the CFA and all they have done and are doing for our community.

“The MND Committee has also organised this years's event to celebrate and thank the community of Benalla and the surrounding areas for their inspirational contribution and their commitment to the cause.

“It’s a great opportunity not just to thank everybody but also to join together to illustrate the power of a united community.”

It is planned that all the different facets that make up Benalla and the surrounding towns and communities will be represented by different groups in the Link Around The Lake Event.

Each group can be identified by a dress code, colour or labelling. They will also be included on an information board at the event.

Entries are also welcomed from families and individuals.

In the past 13 years Benalla’s annual Act to D-feet MND has averaged more than 1800 participants walking, running or cycling around the lake and has raised more than $500 000 for MND research.

The Benalla event has also inspired other communities to do the same.

On April 19 it is also planned to hold the annual MND bike ride, relay and King and Queen of the Lake events before the record breaking Link Around the Lake which will take place at 10.30 am.
