Scheffler had not won a PGA Tour event until claiming the Phoenix Open title on February 13, but followed that breakthrough win with further victories in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.
The win in Austin took Scheffler to the top of the world rankings and he fully justified that position with victory at Augusta National, finishing three shots clear of Rory McIlroy despite four-putting the 72nd hole.
Victory at Southern Hills - where he won the Big-12 Championship for the University of Texas in 2015 - would make it five wins, two of them majors, in just 98 days and take Scheffler half way to an unprecedented calendar grand slam.
"That's the kind of stuff for you all to write about," Scheffler told the assembled media at his pre-tournament press conference.
"For me I'm going to try not to read the stories whether they're good or bad. Living in the moment is usually what works best for me.
"I don't want to get to high or too low. If you guys are really building me up then I may not prepare as hard because I show up thinking I'm the guy, I'm the man and no-one can touch me.
"For me, staying in my own lane and doing my own thing is what works best. I've really just performed my best when I've kept my head down and not really paid attention to anything else."
Scheffler, who was fourth on his US PGA debut at Harding Park in 2020 and eighth at Kiawah Island last year, will partner fellow major champions Jon Rahm (US Open) and Collin Morikawa (Open Championship) in the first two rounds.
