The Keith Cotchin-trained and Greg Sugars-driven three-year-old was stepping out for the first time since May last year but wasted no time in demonstrating he was back bigger and better than ever.
Before going to the spelling paddock he had won four races on the trot as a two-year-old and suffered defeat only once — on debut — in five starts in his freshman season. In his return to racing, Sugars allowed Betternbetter to be crossed by Tidal Surge early before assuming the front running again soon after and was never in danger of defeat.
Betternbetter’s 1.54.3 mile rate over the 1690m trip was a PB and a pointer of better things to come. Breeder and part owner of Betternbetter, Rochester’s Denis Pangrazio, was trackside to see the win and admitted he liked what he saw.
■ ELMORE trots trainer Keith Cotchin’s recent hot run continued with another winner at last week’s Kilmore meeting. Cotchin produced five-year-old mare Gone Too Far to notch her eighth career win from 32 outings in claiming the honours in a C3-4 class event.
Reinsman Ryan Duffy won the race at the start on Gone Too Far by getting the Big Jim mare to take up the front running and from that position dictated the terms.
A winner two starts previously at Echuca in mid December Gone Too Far cruised to the line seven metres ahead of the runner-up, Shawami Lass, with Art Prevails third.
