Underwood’s Ballarat success

By Corowa Free Press

Amy Underwood began the Victorian Lightweight Selection trials in style recording a great win at Ballarat.

Competing against a full field of eight scullers over the 2,000-metre course, Amy took the lead early and was in a strong position rowing well in the conditions.

Amy led all the way to win by seven seconds and record a confidence-building win.

Amy’s second row was in the Lightweight Double, teaming with Luka Currell from Corio Bay R.C – a 15- year-old Year 10 student from Geelong.

Amy and Luka were having their first row together heading to the start but the crew clicked together from the first stroke.

With eight doubles including three lightweights lining up the girls were against the reigning Victorian champions.

The crew had a great first race passing three crews to finish 1.5 seconds behind the winners and gaining much needed race experience.

Amy is heading to NSW State Championship in Penrith on February 15-17 to complete the Victorian selection process. Another strong performance will help with her selection.

The club’s junior rowers are off to Nagambie on Sunday, February 10 for the first of their 1,000-metre and 2,000-metre races.

Our Under 15 rowers will be in singles, doubles and quads as they take on the Nagambie course. The club’s C and D Grade rowers will also be competing while Jayden Collier takes on the state’s best Under 19 scullers over the 2,000-metre course.

This regatta will assist the club with crew selections for the state championships held at Nagambie on March 2 and 3.
