“We have a full house for the first time, expecting 104 people in attendance which is great,” Rotary Club of Corowa vice president Gary Poidevin said.
The Federation Dinner and Tim Fischer Oration is held to commence Corowa’s Federation Festival weekend, which also consists of the markets at Bangerang Park, a fireworks display, the B&S Ball, ecumenical service and Sanger Street Parade, all running from Friday night’s dinner through to Sunday.
The oration at the dinner will be delivered by Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, who is currently the commander of highway and traffic control.
Mr Corboy attended high school in Corowa, began his policing career in Albury in 1981 and was appointed lock up keeper in Corowa in 1986.
He still holds fond memories of his time in Corowa, during which many of his fundamental policing practices were formed.
Michael is a life member of the Police Association and has been an advocate of many police, community and charitable organisations.
The Federation Festival was first held in 1980 and celebrates Corowa’s place in history as the ‘birthplace of federation’.
“Griff’s Fireworks have provided the fireworks for this year’s display, which will be wonderful,” Mr Poidevin said.
To kick start the B&S Ball festivities out at the Cougars’ rugby ground, Emily Hatton and Jade Gibson will be on the day stage from 2-6pm. Silverstring Outlaws, Jade Holland, Emily Hatton and Jade Gibson will be on the main stage from 7pm to midnight.
This year’s festival has targeted the ‘Australian literature’ theme, with schools, businesses and community groups encouraged to enter a float – but they must be quick.
“It’s not too late to put a float in, I’m accepting them on Wednesday and Thursday and then Friday is a close off. I’ve got 20-plus entries including bands,” Mr Poidevin said.
The parade will be highlighted by six bands; Boroondara Brass, Albury Wodonga Pipes and Drums, Wangaratta Pipe Band and Echuca Brass.
But tipped to steal the show this year is the Fifth/Sixth Batallion, The Royal Victoria Regiment Pipes and Drums.
“This is a time for the community to get together again, what a great way with Australia Day on the weekend, the Federation Festival gives everyone the opportunity to participate in some form to celebrate Australia day and celebrate our federation heritage with great entertainment,” Mr Poidevin said.
The Rotary Club of Corowa is still taking bookings over the phone for market stalls, urging people to send their enquiries to Gail Law.
