Club turning pink for charity

May 29, 2018

Stacey Towers, Donna Castles and Juanita Breen are preparing for Cobram and District Harness Racing Club’s pink day.

Cobram and District Harness Racing Club is turning pink for its annual charity race meeting supporting the McGrath Foundation.
McGrath Foundation ambassador and director Tracy Bevan has accepted the club’s invitation to attend the event on Sunday, June 3.
Representatives from Harness Racing Victoria, zone clubs, Moira Shire, Cobram-Barooga women’s groups, service clubs and Cobram Secondary College will join Mrs Bevan in lighting a candle in support of those suffering the illness.
Races have been named in honour of the local groups supporting the cause; the feature race being the Paul Roberts Jewellers Invitation Lady Drivers Pace.
Xerri Evans and Babcon Plant Hire have provided awards for the aggregate lady driver and trainer of the day respectively, and Adele Watson has donated a trophy for female drive of the day.
Harness racing secretary Bob Watson said the day was not possible without generous support on many levels.
‘‘The club is very appreciative of the support of the Victorian Government, which has provided funds to promote the event, along with Moira Shire and all local groups and businesses that have generously supported the day,’’ he said.
The charity event has become a mainstay for the club after it approached the McGrath Foundation to see if it would become involved eight years ago.
Mr Watson hoped the fact the meet was on a Sunday might encourage more people to come along.
‘‘It’s such a great cause and we get a lot of support from the community; no-one ever seems to turn down the chance to contribute when asked — which is fantastic,’’ he said.
‘‘Several of our life members are survivors of the disease and it affects a lot more people than you would think, so it is always a really special day for the club.’’
The day will provide plenty of track-side attractions to entertain patrons.
A vintage car display for motoring enthusiasts will be one of the highlights and anyone wishing to take part can phone Mr Watson on 0409 401 189.
Women are reminded to dress to impress for lady of the day and best hat, with great prizes on offer.
All women will receive a ticket for lucky female patron, as well as the chance to draw a horse in the sweep of the Invitation Lady Drivers Race.
The Cobram Secondary College jazz band will also be on hand to entertain during the afternoon, with the talented Freya Black singing the national anthem.
‘‘Cobram Harness Racing is extremely appreciative of the support of both the college’s music and Advance students who will assist in the running of the day,’’ Mr Watson said.
The major car raffle, organised by the harness racing female drivers to boost funds raised for the foundation, will be drawn at 4.30pm.
Everyone is invited to come along, enjoy a great social day and wear something pink, with all proceeds going to McGrath Foundation.
