In a strange old game of MFL, Barooga managed to just hold on against new boys Shepparton East to win by three goals in difficult conditions.

The Hawks raced to an early lead kicking with the strong breeze and it looked as though the game was over before it had really began when they took a 34 point lead to the first break while keeping Shepparton East goalless.

Barooga found more resistance from the Eagles in the second term that saw them kick two goals but they wasted opportunities to reduce the margin further.

The premiership quarter was always going to be the make or break for both teams in the see-sawing contest and it was Shepparton East who played the better football kicking against the breeze.

The Eagles learnt the hard lesson that if you do not take your chances in front of goal it is most likely you will live to regret it and that is exactly what happened as they misfired horribly in the third, kicking 0.5 although managing to restrict Barooga to just the one goal.

Unbelievably, the final term was just as bad in front of the big sticks for the Eagles as they kicked 1.6 to all but kick themselves out of the contest.

They finished with a quite staggering 3.15, denying themselves the chance of a famous upset against one of the MFL’s best teams.

Barooga would be concerned in the manner in which they fell away after quarter time after a lighting fast start but would have no doubt walked away relieved to earn the four points on their travels.

Lucas Olson again provided a fantastic focal point up forward kicking two goals, while Billy Andrew continues to get better with each passing week and would be right up there as one of the club’s most consistent performers this season.

Cam Sandral provided some great run and carry around the ground and co-coach James Hazelman helped steady ship in face of the Shepparton East onslaught.
