The 14th annual Cobram Barooga Golf Club 5A Senior Open attracted a capacity field of 112 men playing stroke as well as 80 men and 72 women playing stableford.
Going into the final round, one shot separated the leaders Alan Bullas (Portsea) and Ian McCleary (Kooringal) from David Robb (Corowa) and defending champion Gordon Claney (Kingston Heath).
With three holes to play, Claney had opened up a one-shot lead over McCleary. Claney finished bogey, par, bogey to McCleary’s par, birdie, par, giving him a two-shot win with scores of 77, 74, and 74.
Several locals featured, with Dave Pocknee winning the next section with a total of 219 off a handicap of 13, together with John Scandrett taking out the stableford section with 106 points off 33.
The women’s stableford winner was Diane Wolfe with 96 points off 8.
The John McAllister Memorial Teams Trophy was taken out by Patterson River, comprising Brian Gray, Tony Hyde and Kerry Boehm.
Other locals to feature were John Ellis, Garry Hunt, David Wilson, Ray Findlay, Tony Alessi, Eugene Zolnierczyk, Alan Lowndes, Ray Wallace, Adrian Kirk, Alan Haddrell and Gai Mitchelson.
‘‘The tournament was hailed a great success by participants due to the tireless efforts of club professional Justin Spierani and his staff, together with that of club captain Wayne Gould,’’ Ross Percy, from the Cobram Barooga Golf Club, said.
‘‘All players were impressed with the quality and presentation of both the old and west courses, which is a great credit to superintendents Tony Johnston, Matt McLeod and their ground staff,’’ Percy said.
