Looking to attack: Chelsea Caughey was a standout for Strathmerton at the weekend.

Strathmerton netballers took on Deniliquin in the opening round.

Here is what the coaches had to say about the opening matches.

A-grade

Deniliquin 54 d

Strathmerton 30

It was a tough match for the first game of the season in hot conditions against a quality opposition.

The girls had a new look defensive end, which was great to try different combinations.

There are lots of things to work on, but there were plenty of positives coming out of the second half.

Awards: Strathy Pub – Chelsea Caughey; Wingates — Kasey Baker.

B-grade

Deniliquin 47 d

Strathmerton 37

It was a good start to a game we already knew was going to be a tough one.

With a new team and not having everyone at training meant it was a game full of different combinations and learning how we play together.

There are loads of things to work on but overall very happy. No-one gave up and all had a crack, even when the game got rough.

A huge congratulation to Maddie Wilson on her debut in defence, where she nailed it.

We have some brilliant juniors coming up so make sure you get over and support them.

Awards: Strathy Pub — Claire Walker; Wingates — Amy Martin; KAFS Fruit Supply — Ruby Pinnuck.

C-grade

Strathmerton 35 d

Deniliquin 26

It was a great win to start the season. Well done to everyone.

We went in to the game short on players, so a massive thanks to everyone who helped us out. We are looking forward to the rest of the season.

Awards: Supreme Meats — Brooke Mackenzie; Sportsfirst — Meldy Padman; Subway — Mariah Tejones.

C-reserve

Deniliquin 48 d

Strathmerton 16

It was a tough start to the season, with Deniliquin taking the early lead.

Strathmerton fought hard, but despite our perseverance and hard work, Deni maintained a steady and increasing lead throughout the game. Despite the loss the girls played a great first game with a few new faces to the team.

Awards: Redgum Photos Towel — Liv Van Every; Keep Active Osteo — Kezz Edgar; Subway — Macey Congram.

Under-17s

Strathmerton 55 d

Deniliquin 25

It was a great team effort with only seven girls. Everyone played well and gelled together.

Emma shot amazingly and Maddi’s defence was faultless. Molly controlled the centre and made smart decisions when feeding into the shooters.

Awards: Wingates — Molly Coburn; Subway — Maddi Wilson; Strathy cafe — Emma Bailey.

Under-15s

Deniliquin 49 d

Strathmerton 6

The girls played a great first game of the season.

Even though it was a tough game and we didn’t walk away with a win, the girls didn’t drop their heads and went out and played a fantastic game.

The girls have a bit to improve on at training but we believe the team will be in for a good season.

Awards: Wingates — Tessa Koopman; Strathy Cafe — Caitlyn Brooks.

Under-13s

Deniliquin 22 d

Strathmerton 11

What a very hot day it was for the opening game.

Deniliquin was a strong side, so great effort. You were all fantastic with your foot work and three feet, which we’ve been working on. We were very proud of each one of you.

Awards: Strathy Cafe — Emily; Subway — Kiara; Strathy Cafe — Ammy.

Minis

It was a great effort from our youngest team. It’s encouraging to see so many girls keen to learn and give it a go.

Awards: Strathy Cafe — Tahlia Muller; Redgum Photos — Darci Bennett.
